QUEST FOR THE CUP: INTERNATIONAL BARTENDING COMPETITION CELEBRATES THE ART AND STYLE BEHIND CREATIVE COCKTAILING

Eighth annual Finlandia Vodka Cup will find the world’s best  aperitif, long drink, after dinner drink.

January 31, 2006, Kittila, Finland – The arctic homeland of Finlandia Vodka served as center stage for the brand’s international cocktail competition. The eighth annual International Finlandia Vodka Cup took place on Jan. 31, 2006 in Lapland, Finland.

The competition brought together top bartenders from 19 countries to showcase a range of signature drinks that have reignited the spirit and golden age of cocktails. In preceding months a myriad of local competitions selected one national winner to represent his/her country at the International final held in the unique Lainio Snow Village, 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle Finland, Lapland.  Bartenders were judged on the art, style and craft behind creative cocktailing as judge’s search for the world’s best aperitif, long drink and after dinner drink.

The 8th International Vodka Cup title was awarded to Jan Lindgren of Hyvinkaa, Finland for his outstanding, creativity in delivering mouthwatering drinks throughout the competition.  Upon winning the competition Lindgern was said to be truly overwhelmed by the experience and looking forward to visiting his choice of  the worlds best cocktail destination where he expand his extensive bartending knowledge.

World renowned cocktail mixologist, Dale DeGroff, and judge for the Finlandia Vodka Cup competition commented “The cocktail bar business is going through a renaissance right now that has not been seen in decades,” adding “It’s an exciting time to be in the cocktail business and this competition will undoubtedly bring some new and unique recipes to the world.”

Previous winners of the Finlandia Vodka Cup include Stojan Crizman from Slovenia in 2004 and Cevat Yildirim from Turkey in 2005.  The cocktails these bartenders created such as the Finlandia Pineapple Kiss, Finlandia Caipiroska and Finlandia Kiwitini have become known around the world.

The Finlandia Vodka Cup consists of three drink categories: an aperitif, a long drink and an after dinner drink.  Every drink a bartender creates must have a new and original recipe based on Finlandia Vodka, or a member of their flavor family; Cranberry Fusion, Lime Fusion, Mango Fusion or Wild Berries Fusion.  Competition events are fun, exciting and entertaining throughout the week – participants are able to experience Finland while participating in snowmobiling safaris and other outdoor activities.
