Angostura® aromatic bitters Global Cocktail ChallengeUK BARTENDER WINS COCKTAIL CHALLENGE
Port
of Spain, Trinidad, Wednesday 14th May, 2008; Jamie Stephenson,
bartender from the United Kingdom, representing the magazine Drinks
International, was the overall winner of the Angostura® aromatic
bitters Global Cocktail Challenge, held May 13th at the Zen
nightclub. He also won the prize for the best non-alcoholic
beverage and the winner of the best alcoholic beverage was Danilo
Oribe, representing the United States. The People’s Choice award
went to one of our local bartenders – Raymond Edwards with his cocktail
– Pa Pa Yo.
The club was bubbling with excitement yesterday, as the competition
took place in front of hundreds of patrons. Members of the food
and beverage industry, came out in their numbers to witness the
memorable event which featured 11 of the world’s best bartenders, who
competed at the highest level. The audience was very excited and
interacted with the hosts; well known radio personalities, Jason and
Blaze from Red 96.7.
The entertainment flowed, incorporating several elements of the
Trinidadian culture, from the Clico Shiv Shakti dancers, Dane Gulston
on the Steelpan, Tassa by the Unity Tassa group, hip hop dancing
by the Trini Alliance group, as well as flair tending by two of the
competitors, Danilo Oribe and Eduardo Gonzalez.
The competitors came from all over the world, including; the United
States, two from the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Venezuela, St.
Kitts, St. Lucia, Barbados and of course two from Trinidad and
Tobago. They had a wonderful time together as a team, learning
from each other and exchanging cocktail making ideas, while cheering
each other on. There was much camaraderie among the contingent
and no doubt they will continue to keep in touch long after the
competition is over.
Angostura is very happy with the success of the event and looks forward
to the next one in 2010. According to Gabriel Faria, Executive Director
of Marketing at Angostura, “ The event was a huge success, and we are
elated that so many of the bartending and hospitality fraternity as a
whole, came to observe the event, which could only auger well for their
future development and that of the entire food and beverage industry in
Trinidad and Tobago.”
The visiting bartenders and their supporters spent the day at Maracas
Beach after the competition and will take in the nightlife at various
clubs, restaurants and bars around the island, before returning to
their countries on Thursday.
